  1. What Does Green Feel Like?
    By Alondra E.

Based on the mentor text What Does Peace Feel Like? By Vladimir Radunsky

Green feels like taking a shower full of money, raining down on you while using money soap.

Green feels like a booger, hanging from your nose, wobbling like a turkey.

Green feels like a warm Aeropostale sweater that I share with my sister, lined with fur.

Green smells like rotting broccoli, reminding me of vomit.

Green smells like Wrigley’s 5 Rain Spearmint Gum freshening your mouth.

Green smells like pine needles on a fat Christmas tree.

Green looks like furry mold on a sandwich when you leave it for a long time.

Green looks like a dirty sewer, home to many rats.

Green looks like little leprechauns sitting on pots of gold.

Green tastes like horrible, nasty green beans straight from the can.

Green tastes like guacamole, better to smear on your face than to eat.

Green tastes like green salsa to drop on your delicious chicken tacos.

Green sounds like verde, vert, grun, graenn, all sounds of green.

Green sounds like a group of people enjoying money-throwing change at a Baptism.

    Green sounds powerful and energetic.

  2. Dear Carlos Zambrano,

This season, you should win the World Series.

Because you are the pitcher, you should make the Cubs win using the fastball. You have lots of power and you can take almost anyone out. But, don't get mad. Take a chill pill so you can play longer in the game. It will be big for your career and the team will be famous. All the fans that you have are going to be worshiping you. After we win the World Series you can make your contract longer so you could be on the Cubs longer than until 2012.

We should win the World Series so we can show the other teams that we can win. If we win the World Series we can get a victory party so the other teams could be jealous of the Cubs. You could be proud of being on the Cubs team. It will be huge for the Cubs. The team will be so surprised that they won the World Series and you guys will be like, "Its a dream." A Cubs win would bring attention to Chicago.

As a Cubs fan, I want them to win the World Series so we can show the White Sox that they are not the only one that can win a World Series. I would be proud to wear my Cubs jersey 24-7. I would be so proud of the Cubs if they win the World Series. I will be int eh front row seats and I will pay for the tickets with my own money because my birthday is in July.

Carlos, please win the World Series so all of the Cubs fans can be proud and can put up the BIG W for our World Series Win.

    Your biggest fan,
    Alondra E.

    Tsunami

I was in a hurry to get home from school in Japan because they let us out early before the tsunami hit. While I was running I felt the ground shake and I could hear the sound of the sirens.

I first felt the earth shake. Then I could see my house falling apart from the water gushing around it. Everything is just breaking apart from the strong earthquake. I felt depressed about seeing my house breaking and falling apart. I didn’t know where I was going to go. I was very worried, because I didn’t know where my aunt was.

The tsunami’s water was so high that I could not see the roof of my house. When I look around all I can see is the disaster from the tsunami. People were trying to help strangers like they were family. I can see an old man asking for help. I also see a little kid cling on to his mom because he is so scared. Then I saw a boat getting hit by the waves and cars getting dragged like they weighed nothing.

After the tsunami calmed down, I can see the rescue team coming to help me and the others

Video games are not very good for your brain, so no video games during the week.
    Love, Mom

    Dear Mom,

I have a video game that will teach me how to skate board, that’s good for your brain.
    Love, AJ

    Dear AJ,

Skateboards can be very dangerous; you can still just do this on the weekends. Why should I change my mind?
    Love, Mom

    Dear Mom,

I will do all my homework. Then can I play video games, for a little bit?
    Love, AJ

  8. Louisiana Alligators Vs. Swamp People
    By John P. Age 8
Troy, Tomy, Mike, and Willy are looking for alligators in Louisiana. Tomy said, “We have to catch some alligators.”
    “You said it!” said Willy.
Willy hooks the alligator with the hook and the bait. They take it back to the dock. But before they do that, they think, “Oh Yeah!”
The alligator says, “I’m gonna eat you.”
Well, Willy hooks it, but Mike does not shoot. Willy says, “What are you waiting for?” They kill it.
When they bring it back to the dock, they sell it. Then they count the money. They all say, “Wow, $900! That is a lot of money!”

    THE REASONS WHY
    By: Makahla King

People should watch their diet because if you eat the right food you will be able to live longer and you will have more energy. McDonalds is not a healthy food choice because the food has a lot of calories and not enough nutrients!
McDonalds is not a healthy choice because they have too many calories and fat calories. The Double Quarter Pounder with cheese equals 740 calories all together and has 158 more fat calories than required. If the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese has 158 more fat calories than required that means it is unhealthy and your body will have no place to store the extra fat calories. Also, the Medium Fries has a total of 380 calories all together and has 170 fat calories. That would leave you with 56 extra fat calories. The fact that the Medium Fries has a large number of fat calories that clearly shows McDonalds is not a healthy food source because you should only get 30% of calories from fat in each item you eat.
McDonalds does not have high nutrition values; as a result McDonalds is unhealthy. Nutrients come from fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Most of McDonalds’ foods consists of meat, white bread, and pickles which are not part of the category of nutrients. These things show that McDonalds is an unhealthy choice because their foods don’t contain nutrients. Even though McDonalds does have supposedly healthy options they aren’t really healthy. For example, the Snack Size Fruit and Walnut Salad has 2% of daily fiber, 0% vitamin A, and 8% of calcium. Therefore, this evidence shows McDonalds has low nutrition values.
Before you order something on a McDonalds’ menu think carefully before you buy anything! When picking something to eat make sure your food contains enough nutrients and watch how many fat calories you eat. Because McDonalds food’s don’t contain enough nutrients and has too many fat calories, McDonalds is not a healthy food choice.

My brain controls my body like I'm controlling Mario in a game. It is as smart as an 85% on a test.

My tummy is like an alarm, beeping to remind me that I am hungry.
Food goes down my throat and my tummy is like a garbage truck and keeps my food in.

My ears are as small as a chipmunk's ear and I can't hear my mom sometimes. When she cleans them it is like throw up and boogers.

My eyes are red like blood and weak like shades closing because I didn't get enough sleep and I didn't want to get up.

My eyebrows are like wagons falling fast down a hill at each other. I don't like taking tests. My fists are down at my sides they feel hot like I'm about to burn into fire pieces. I don't like when boys, like someone like Jack, is mean to me.

My heart holds my family like a taco's tortilla holds meat. My heart holds my stuffed bear and I call her stuffy because she is all stuffed up with fuzzy things like my heart is stuffed with love.

I live in a drawing of people, characters in a book, a bear and me, it keeps me company when I'm bored.

He sees the sun rise and he races back home. He puts his hover board in the garage and walks into his yard. He went into the house and walks into the living room and sees his brother watching Tunsi. The mail boy went to his room and fell on his bed and plays Epic Mickey.

  12. Learn How to Skateboard
By Angelo A. Sandoval (4th Grader)

To skateboard we need jeans, two skateboards, two Nike shoes, and one helmet. First, go in the house and grab your skateboard. Then, put on your helmet. Next, ride the skateboard in the alley or on the sidewalk. Put one foot on the skateboard and the other on the ground. Push the skateboard with one of your feet. For some people, it will be your left or your right foot. If you go fast, you have to put two feet on the skateboard and do a kick flip. Last, put the skateboard away.

    My Tooth Cracked!
    By: Nicholas Chiu

“Wake up!” yelled my grandpa. I was still in bed feeling sleepy and snoring. My grandpa ripped the blanket off of me. I felt really cold, and that woke me up. I brushed my teeth feeling I was going to fall asleep again, and I felt my tooth wiggle a little bit. I stopped brushing my teeth and I wiggled my loose tooth with my tongue. I changed my clothes. When I was done I went to the living room to get ready. I put on my jacket, socks, and then my shoes. We left for school. At school, I couldn’t stop twisting my tooth with my finger. Finally, it was lunchtime.
We lined up and went to the cafeteria. When we got our school lunch we went to our table to eat. The lunch was sausage pizza. I sat at the table with my friends eating my lunch. With every bite my loose tooth throbbed. My tooth was so painful that I had to eat my pizza slowly.
All day, I couldn’t stop pulling my tooth. Finally the day was over! Quickly, all of my classmates and I went to go get our stuff. I packed all the things I needed and then I waited for them to call my bus number. Finally they called my bus and I went out the classroom and I ran down the stairs. I rushed out to get to my bus. I was sitting in the middle, next to the aisle. I talked to my friends and did not worry about my loose tooth.
When the bus ride was over I saw my grandpa’s van. I ran to the van because it was freezing cold outside! I got in the van and my grandma gave me some cookies to eat. When I was halfway done with my bag of cookies I heard my tooth crack. I was panicking because I knew I was going to have to go to the dentist to take my tooth out. I do not like going to the dentist because it hurts! Once I got home I said to my grandma, “I cracked my tooth when I was eating the cookies!” She went in the house and called my mom. She hung up the phone and she told me, “You have to go to the dentist to get your tooth out.” I felt scared.
My grandpa took me to the dentist. When I got there I told the dentist’s assistant about my tooth. One of the assistants took x-rays of my tooth. The assistant showed me the room to wait for the dentist. It felt like I had to wait forever for the dentist to come. The assistant came in and put the picture of my tooth on the dentist’s equipment. A few minutes later the dentist came in to the room I was waiting in. He washed his hands and put on his gloves. He sat on a chair and pressed a button that made me recline. The dentist took out a shot then put the needle on top. I was breathing really hard. I opened my mouth and he gave me the shot. It felt painful. It took time for my gums at the area of my broken tooth to get numb. The worst part was when the dentist had to give me a shot in my mouth. It felt better when that was over. The dentist came back in the room. He took out a pair of pliers and in 5 seconds he pulled the tooth out of my mouth.
When I got home it felt weird to eat my dinner. As I was chewing my rice kept on going in the hole where my tooth had been pulled out. I was happy that it was all over. I hope it will never happen again!

    Dear Jarrett J. Krosoczka,

My name is Anthony LoCoco and I like drawing just like you do. I’m ten and I’m in fourth grade. My favorite thing to do is to draw. I like to draw cartoon animals. I give them crazy names like “Pingo Penguin” and “Pluto Platypus.” My favorite character is Pluto Platypus. When I write about him, I usually make him a secret agent. I have him save people and do crazy things. His sidekick is “Ricko Raccoon” and they fight against other crazy animals. Drawing and writing books are cool. I’m still using animals in my comics, but I’m writing more about Pingo than Pluto now.

I like your writing and illustrating. I don’t usually read a lot, but I like the Lunch Lady books so much that I read each one in a half hour. I didn’t want to put any of them down until I was finished. I admire the books because of all the pictures and how it is a comic. I like to draw and write comics too. I sometimes draw and color with grey, black, white, and another color just like how you use grey, black, white and yellow. I don’t like coloring, so most of the time I just draw in black and white.

I also like all the action in all the books. I also like how Lunch Lady talks, like when she says, “Holy Tuna!” and “Holey Moley Cheese!” “What in the chocolate pudding is going on?” is another one of my favorite expressions from your books. I like her disguised weapons like hover pizza, hairnet nets, and taco night vision goggles. My favorite part is when Lunch Lady and Betty used the sonic boom juice boxes to blow up the bad guys in League of the Librarians. My favorite part of The Summer Camp Shakedown is when the three kids stole the rotten egg water balloons and used them to fight against the swamp monster.

I wonder if you will write more Lunch Lady books? I hope you do. I would like to read a book where Lunch Lady and Betty just save people and beat up monsters. I would like to have them be in other settings besides the school.

How did you learn to draw so good? What can I do to draw better? I would like to become a comic writer and draw cool and crazy pictures like you. If not, I’ll be an actor. I was on a tv show called, “Outrageous Foods.” I ate these things that are like pizza called panzelodies with my baseball team. We had to eat each thing twenty times for them to get it right.

    Sincerely your #1 Fan,

    Anthony LoCoco

P.S. I hope you write a letter back with a picture of Lunch Lady on it. Maybe you can even show me each step for drawing Lunch Lady? That would be awesome!

  17. Cat Naps

(A metaphor poem describing me as a writer.)

    by Christian M.
    Grade 3

I am a cat wandering around.
    I am looking for mischief.
The kind that gives me ideas.
Climbing a tree makes me want to take a nap.
When I wake up I write.
I want to tell the story of the time
I got the dog in trouble.
    He was chasing me
And he knocked down the blueberry pie
    That was on the table.
    It fell on the floor.
    No one picked it up.
Later the dog came back to eat it.
I watched him from the window.

  18. Bouncy Seat Escape

    A Memoir

    by Christian M.
    Grade Three

When I was four I remember my mom hurt her arm. My dad drove us to the UIC Hospital in Chicago. My mom went to get an x-ray and my dad took me to the waiting room. My dad put me in the bouncy seat. My dad closed his eyes for a minute. Then when his eyes were shut I was bouncing really hard in the seat. All of I sudden I bounced right out of the seat! I was just sitting there, and when my dad opened his eyes he said, “How did you get out!” I started laughing.

Then my mom came back from her x-ray, and it was one o’clock in the afternoon. We drove to McDonald’s for lunch. My dad gave me half a hamburger and it fell all over my clothes. I was wearing a shirt with a teddy bear on it. It had brown eyes and a blue head. There was ketchup all over it. My dad told my mom what happened, and she said, “No more bouncy seat!” I laughed.

  19. MY BOUTIQUE
    An Ode

    Standing in Clair’s,
Looking at the gloomy stars that stand as earrings,
I touch them one by one,
    Naming them Duppy, Eppy, Puppy.
    I’m in a fashion show,
Wearing that hat makes the worms on my head go mindless, but they stay stylish.
I try on the new colorful toed socks that make my feet POP!
I’m so tired of carrying paper,
I grab a wallet that has zing,
    And also bling,
    Roomy.

  20. Tsunami Poem
    By: Makahla

I see waves crash upon my window,
I snatch up my son for protection.

I feel safe with him in my arms,
As long as I know he’s away from harm.

I hear water smacking against the roof,
Afraid and hungry I lie there beside him.

I taste the tears dripping from my eyes,
I will never be able to see my little boy grow up.

I smell the boiling beans on the stove,
That can never be eaten now.

    By Airriona Jones, 8th grade
    I see
Devastated building people un-buried bodies and soaked cars, floating house and turned over farms. And it needs some more construction. work done to it

    I feel
I feel like crying what if my family was in that conduction? How would I feel? Deep down inside I would feel very inner –turmoil. I feel the heavy waves coming above my feet past my waste, neck. Head.

    I smell
I smell burning buildings, dirty clothes and garbage.
    I hear
I hear people crying, dying, and hollering and building collapsing down and the waves coming to hunted me down

A woman with a tin kettle
    Slogs through the mud
Calling out to whoever may hear but cannot move
Pouring soup across their thirsty lips

A hunched man wades through the water
    Collecting remnants of memories
    Slowly, as the water ebbs,
He begins to clear his land, gather scraps, and build again

A team of sturdy men in haz-mat suits
    Poking, peering
    Hoping against hope
To not find what they’re looking for

A woman in the corner of a stuffy gymnasium
    Embraces a stranger
    Listening, whispering,
    Rebuilding the soul

    A nation of waterlogged survivors
    Slogging, gathering, poking, embracing
    Creating a new, shared identity

  22. Got really geeked about the kinship writing my student and I did at our last session...here's the other piece, once again not fully editing or revised...

    By Nancy
    UIC Graduate Student

I see my life floating about me
    There goes my favorite teacup,
    A half-read book,
A photograph from my wedding day.

    I smell briny water
    Soaking through molding cushions
Fish bruised by land, slowing rotting
    And fear. I smell fear.

    I taste salty tears
    Streaking down my face
And the water-logged wool I’m clenching between my teeth
    To suppress my screams

    I hear slowly receding water
    Slinking away
    Taking on a new form
Just hours ago it roared and crested

    I touch my splintered headboard
And my daughter’s soaked stuffed bear
I touch his swollen pale lips
And know I will never feel breath on them again

I feel anguish, despair and self-pity
    “Why?” my brain screams, “Why?”
How will I go on without him?
How will I pick up the floating pieces of my life
    And start again?
